0 PastryParis

There's nothing like browsing old Paris pics to get in a certain frame of mind. Especially when you're supposed to be drawing Place Vendome + gems + perfume bottles etc.
I've yet to ride a Bateau Mouche though I watched Audrey Hepburn ride with Cary Grant in Charade the other day.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Here's a bateaux that will make you want to dream.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Christophe Michalak's Tarte au Citron Meringuee by Susan Hochbaum,
from Susan's new PastryParis gift book.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Susan juxtaposes Paris' most luscious treasures, often in onsite settings, in a whimsical way that reflects their design, colors, ingenuity.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Bear and myself have been tussling over who is going to get their paws on Susan's book.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Bear, being the true Parisian, has, so far, the upper...hand
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Visual wit abounds. Look at the sublime repetition of forms in the Laurent Duchene's minty mousse dome sitting on a layer of strawberry jam amidst raspberry coulis whilst facing the Pont Neuf.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM Pierre Herme's macarons sit by the Saint-Sulpice fountain, just a stones throw from his shop on 72, rue Bonaparte. Clever of Herme to put his patisserie by a park full of benches for hungry shoppers.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM 'Bear stop hoarding Susan's book!'
You can meet Susan at WH Smith in Paris on October 20 at 7 PM.
Just be sure to RSVP.
There will be a pastry tasting and champers
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM I was gazing so intently at Susan's Napoleon/croissant hat, I had to run out of the house and find something to pop in my mouth. Now I know how you feel when visual temptation calls.
PASTRY PARIS BY SUSAN HOCHBAUM I'm lucky a shop nearby carries Balthazar almond croissants. Did you know this is what happens to the day-old left over croissants? They're filled with almond paste, smothered in toasted almonds and sort of squashed down. I always think they look a bit sat on...Still it tasted darn good after drooling over Susan's pictures.
Susan's book will be out on October 11, so mark your calendars and have pastry on hand for heavens sake!
BONJOUR PastryParis!

0 Prepping for Paris

Tulip Printemp, Watercolor at Etsy, 9" x 11"
~
BEAR has been prepping for Paris for months memorizing the Paris Metro map...
Carol does her back exercises in front of it as well...
BEAR eats his petit dejeuner on a Paris Metro placemap just for good measure...
BEAR is of course already packed. Not that he has much to worry about. Stripes are ALWAYS IN in Paris. Carol, on the other hand, has been throwing things at an an empty suitcase for 2 weeks.
The day of departure will be packing Hell!
It was suggested by the kind British lady (who wanted to abduct Bear at Alice's Tea Cup) that Carol only wear matching black and white stripes. If I could fit into this little number, I'd be wearing this dress non-stop. Do you know whose it is? Do tell and I'll begin the regime toute a suite!
BEAR insists we bring along the Pylones birdie, Piu-Piu...

French Ribbon Fleurs, watercolor on etsy, 9" x 11"

~
And why not?
This little birdie adds a lot to a watercolor still life non?
There's been a change of plans. Instead of a running (Ha!) all over Paris hitting every salon de the, we thought it might be wiser to hit as many flower shops instead...
Especially since we're really into painting flowers these days...Have you ever entered Lachaume?
At 10, rue Royale near the Madeleine - super posh, but perhaps I could buy just 1 flower to paint?
Then there are the dozens of Au nom de la Rose to stop in...
The idea I came up with this weekend was to combine Paris' gorgeous flowers with some FAB desserts in a watercolor...
Is this not a winning combination?
Definitely worth the effort non?
On a more down-to-earth note*
I MUST NOT FORGET to bring French Girl her Nathan's Sesame BAGELS!!!
Otherwise I'll be sleeping in the streets :(

Do you have any special prepping for Paris tips I should know about?
Do tell all svp.
The countdown begins for Thursday the 17th.
BONJOUR PREPPING FOR PARIS!

0 SAINT VALENTIN'S DAY!

Here is my Saint Valentin's Day presie to you dear PBers!
You've been so kind sending so many thoughtful messages that have touched my heart :)
Did you know there are gorgeous FREE pastry books just waiting for you in Paris? It's absolutement true! If you happen to wander into a patisserie that belongs to the prestious 'Relais Desserts' there are goodies gratuit by the till, like this sumptious FREE calendar. Oh why did 2010 have to come along?
My favorite picture was August's guimauve...miam miam
Blue Bird Tea time, watercolor, 9" x 11"
For a mere blue bird's song (like buying just one macaron or anything else that will take you to the cash register, you'll find all manner of pastry freebies (none edible though).
Rose Bud Tea Time, watercolor, 9" x 11"
I found these journals from the Relais Desserts. The text is in both French and English with recipes included from France's finest pastry chefs...
The photographs are to-die-for!!!
Dalloyau has a tradition of lush and free pastry booklets...
More Miam-Miam!
Les Entres too are included and calorie-free!
Naturalement I flipped for Lenotre's gratuit pastry booklets...
All those yummy brush strokes - right up my allee :)
How I would love to paint this dessert...sigh
Not 'Free' but at least MAD ABOUT MACARONS is now in stock on Amazon. The Scottish publisher thanked me for the PB post, but said the shipment never arrived. Someone somewhere is having a BIG macaron book party...ahem
Not exactly 'Free' but almost. I got back my pictures from the Philadelphia Alliance Francaise exhibit and started putting the still life watercolors into these simple See-Thru Box Frames (for all of $6.50 each) and they look pretty terrific in my humble opinion. So if you recently bought a PB watercolor and are wondering how to frame it, these do the trick rather nicely!
*BTW you will need an 11" x 14" white mat + (4) Photo corners to hold the watercolor. The mat will require some minor trimming on the top and one side to fit inside the plastic box - easy as pie.
Again THANKS SO MUCH for all your kind messages while I'm house-bound.
And THANKS for supporting PB with your watercolor purchases!
PBer Jeanne Long sent me this lovely photo collage she made of her new painting plus included Parisien goodies. If you should be so inspired to follow her example, please email me a photo and I'll put it up on PB. What goes out comes back to you does it not?
BONJOUR SAINT VALENTIN'S DAY!

0 Parisien Pastries!

Parisien pastry Sometimes a Parisien pastry looks like jewelry...
And sometimes a Parisien bracelet looks like pastry...
Parisien pastry Sometimes a Parisien pastry looks like a work of art (more often than not)
And sometimes a Parisien artwork of food looks like I don't know what...
Parisien pastry Sometimes looking at boxes of macarons makes you want to take out your paintbox...
Parisien pastry And then you pray.
Parisien pastry Sometimes a box of Parisien fraises/strawberries...
Parisien pastry Looks just like a berry red pousette/baby stroller...
Or like a Parisien pup in a berry red coat...
Parisien pastry There's no question...
Parisien pastry That Parisiens...
Parisien pastry Get their 3 - 5 (RED) fruits a day...
But are they getting them all in pastries is the question.
And does it matter?
BONJOUR PARISIEN PASTRIES!!
